Herawati Sudoyo is a Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator ofthe Human Genome Diversity and Disease Division at the MochtarRiady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN) since 2022. Before joining MRIN, she held the position as the Deputy Director of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology in Jakarta from 1992-2021 as well as the team leader of Human Genome Diversity and Disease and Forensics DNA laboratory. She is the chairperson of Medical Science Commission of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences. Dr.Sudoyo received an Honorary Associate Professor from Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney, Australia.
Dr.Sudoyo received her Medical Degree (MD) from the University of Indonesia and earned a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Monash University, Australia. Her research primarily focuses on the molecular pathology of mitochondrially associated disorders, ranging from rare to complex diseases. As part of efforts to enhance forensic science in Indonesia, she contributed to the identification process following the 2004 Australian Embassy bombing, which led to the establishment of the first Forensic DNA Laboratory. With Indonesia's rich ethnic and genomic diversity, she leads the Indonesian Genome Diversity Project (IGDP), generating vast whole genome sequencing data to study population structure, disease susceptibility, and distribution, advancing precision medicine.
Dr. Sudoyo is a founding member of the Asia Pacific Society of Human Genetics (APSHG). Additionally, she serves on the advisory boards for the Indonesian Society of Human Genetics (InaSHG) and the Indonesian Genomic Association (AGI). She is also a founding member and the first president of the Indonesian Biorisk Association, whereshe continues her expertise and serves on the advisory board.
Dr. Sudoyo was actively involved in biosecurity and global health diplomacy, representing Indonesia in various international forums, including the United Nations Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) Meetings of Experts in Geneva (2008-2015) and ASEAN workshops on biological threat reduction. She played a key role in developing Indonesia's National Code of Conduct on Biosecurity and later served as a consultant for the World Health Organization's Science Division on Dual Use Research of Concern in 2020.
Her contributions to science have been widely recognized, earning her several awards, including the Australian Alumni Award for Scientific Research and Innovation (2008), the Australian Alumni of the Year (2020), the Habibie Award for Medical Science and Technology (2008), the US CDC National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Honor Award for leading the successful multinational partnership to build the first capacity in Indonesia for identifying emerging zoonotic viruses (2016), UNESCO/Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) fellowship on Human Genome Program, and the Toray
